Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is the art and science of convincing and unconvincing yourself of any belief. Hypnosis is the process of deprogramming negative unhealthy beliefs and reprogramming them or replacing them with positive healthy beliefs.
All hypnosis is self hypnosis. The job of the hypnotherapist/hypnotist is to help coach the client through the self hypnosis process. The hypnotist help guide the client in to a state of hypnosis and teaches the client techniques that will allow the client to use his/her own natural ability to change the way he/she thinks, feel or behaves.
Everyone travels in and out of hypnosis during the day with out even knowing it. This is mostly done while sitting at a computer, driving the car or watching tv. Have you ever driven somewhere that you are so familiar with that it is almost automatic how you got there? This is referred to as "road hypnosis".
Have you ever watched a movie and discussed it with another person that you watched it with and you say, "I don't remember that in the movie." This is a form of hypnosis when you are unable to recall all of the events that happened.
A Consulting Hypnotist helps ordinary, everyday people with ordinary everyday problems using individual hypnotic techniques.
Does hypnosis work?
Yes, hypnosis does work, there is clinical evidence that supports and proves that it does work. *
Who can be hypnotized?
Anyone that is willing and allows it can be hypnotized.
What is it like to be in a hypnotic state?
To help explain what it is like to be in a hypnotic state, which is more often referred to being in a state of "trance", I will explain the 4 states of the mind and my experiences with being in trance.
4 States of the mind:
1. Beta Brain Waves - are associated with the normal waking consciousness and heightened alertness, logic and critical reasoning.
2. Alpha Brain Waves - are associated with relaxation, this is that state of the brain while you are "day dreaming".
3. Theta Brain Waves - are associated with deep relaxation, deep meditation or light sleep (this is the state that we want to achieve during hypnosis), while in the theta state, you are aware of everything that is going on around you.
4. Delta Brain Waves - Delta Brain Waves are the slowest of the 4 brain waves in frequencies, this is associated with deep dreamless sleep where all awareness is fully detached.
When I am in trance, I am very relaxed, yet very aware of what is going on around me, such as hearing the phone ring, a dog bark or a car door close. The best way for me to describe it, is when I am in trance, it is like when I am getting ready to fall asleep with the tv on, I can here the commercials (voices), I am very relaxed and about to fall asleep but, I am not yet completely sleeping.
Can I be made to do anything while in a hypnotic state or trance?
Absolutely NOT! You can not be made to do anything against your will, morals or beliefs. You are aware at all times of what you are doing and will not do anything that you would not do during your normal waking state.
While in trance or a hypnotic state, am I under the control of the hypnotherapist/hypnotist?
Absolutely NOT! The hypnotherapist/hypnotist can not make you do anything against your own will or make you do anything that you would not normally do. You are in complete control of yourself while in a hypnotic state.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No Way!, the worse thing that could happen is that you might fall asleep. In the event of this happening, you will either wake up naturally or the hypnotherapist/hypnotist will wake you up when the session is coming to an end.
What if I don't think that I have gone in to trance?
Even if you don't think that you were in a hypnotic state or in trance, your unconscious mind will only take the positive suggestions or affirmations in the best possible way and you will still benefit from them.
How many sessions will it take?
Research and experience indicate that there are some guidelines that generally hold true:
Recommendations for optimal success:
20 pounds or less 1-2 sessions
20 - 40 pounds 4-6 sessions
50 pounds or more 4-12 sessions
More than 50 pounds may require more than 12 sessions
1 session will usually produce immediate results. 2 sessions are recommended, and more may be necessary depending on the individuals situation.
1 session will produce results, and is typically used to give suggestions for improvement. Follow up sessions may be needed to remove any glitches or obstacles keeping the individual from achieving the results they desire.
Individual results may vary depending on the client's own willingness to participate and motivation to achieve the desired results. The number of sessions that it will take to achieve the desired results will vary from person to person and the results cannot be guaranteed.
Do you take Insurance?
No, but, with a doctors recommendation you may be able to use funds from your flexible spending account.
What about stage shows and the people doing crazy things?
Stage shows are staged. The hypnotist will use 4 filters to pick out whom will be in the show. First they ask for volunteers, anyone who does not want to be seen doing something crazy will not go up on the stage. Then they ask the volunteers to do what they ask them to. If the hypnotist asks a volunteer to do something they are not willing to do, that volunteer will get up and walk off of the stage. The hypnotist will then have the volunteers do something a bit outlandish. While the volunteers are doing what was asked of them, the hypnotist will watch to see which volunteers are the most animated. The hypnotist will then ask those volunteers to do something that is yet even more outlandish. The volunteers are not doing anything that they would not do during their normal waking state, but now they can say, "I was under hypnosis".
* There has been an enormous amount of studies and clinical documentation at well known universities supporting the evidence of the success of hypnosis.
